Green Low-Carbon Transit Travel Options

If you are traveling in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Washington, DC, San Francisco, or London, you can find directions and navigation help at www.hopstop.com. Similar to Google-maps, but specific to rail/subway, bus and walking in the above six cities, Hopstop.com will let you enter your starting and destination addresses and provide you with the time, distance and routes by public transit or foot. An incredibly useful tool, we can only hope that hopstop.com will continue to add more cities.

The New York City MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) promotes hopstop.com with facts such as that every full bus keeps up to 40 cars off the roads, and every full train-car keeps between 75-125 cars off the road!

If you are looking for detailed information about what might be the lowest carbon options for vacations this summer, check out the report and guide produced by the Union for Concerned Scientists, Getting There Greener, where they compare the best travel options depending upon number of travelers, distance traveling, and type of transit. The link: http://www.ucsusa.org/clean_vehicles/solutions/cleaner_cars_pickups_and_suvs/greentravel/getting-there-greener.html will let you choose the full report, a summary, or a quick reference chart.

Traveling by public transport not only allows you to go lightly and reduce your carbon footprint, but it also sheds interesting insights into the pulse of the city you are visiting, and I have found usually produces funny travel tales, so let hopstop.com help you with plotting your course.

MUSIC! New favorite CD ~ Rupa & The April Fishes

My new absolute favorite CD is Extraordinary Rendition by Rupa & The April Fishes. Most of the songs are sung in French, with one in Spanish, Indian and another in English - beautiful lyrics, wonderful music. There is a touch of Pink Martini in the feel. The lyrics insert is in both English and the language of the song.

Rupa Marya is an amazing woman - a gifted musician and composer (as you will hear), as well as a doctor! on faculty at the University of California at San Francisco.

Extraordinary Rendition makes for a great soundtrack while you read Green Earth Guide: Traveling Naturally in France......enjoy!

A Sustainable Saturday in Paris

Rather than reinvent the wheel, I am directing you to the blog of my publisher, North Atlantic Books, which has posted a sample itinerary I prepared based on my book and travels - A Sustainable Saturday in Paris. See http://northatlanticbooks.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/a-sustainable-saturday-in-paris/

I thought it was such a good idea that I have decided to post a few more daily itineraries here. So stay tuned for more to come and if you are not in Paris, enjoy the itinerary vicariously.

Today is the Day!

Today is the Day! that the Green Earth Guide: Traveling Naturally in France is available.

Local bookstores can get it easily, if they don't have it, since it is distributed by Random House, and many online booksellers have the book including Powell's Books, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Borders. In England it is available at Waterstone's and Amazon UK, and in France at Amazon France, as well as two English language bookstores - Shakespeare & Co. in Paris, and Librairie Shakespeare in Avignon.

In New York City, at least two independent booksellers are selling it. Idlewild Books (a wonderful travel bookstore - see my blog post Monday, October 6, 2008 New Independent Travel Bookstore in New York City: Another Place to Visit Near Union Square)

And McNally Jackson, a beautiful bookstore on Prince Street, in the lively SoHo area of Manhattan.

In the Upper Valley, the Norwich Bookstore in Norwich, the Dartmouth Bookstore in Hanover, and Borders in West Lebanon all stock the book.

For some additional information and a few corrections to the book see the Traveling Naturally Website, www.travelingnaturally.com. This picture (not in the book) is of the Sacre Couer Basilica in Paris in the Spring. The nuns sing vespers here every evening at 6pm (Sundays at 4pm) and this is not to be missed as their voices fully charge the place.

Check back as I will be posting a few daily itineraries for Traveling Naturally in France.

I hope you enjoy the book and all your traveling naturally adventures.

You can buy or order the book from any of the booksellers below. Green Earth Guide: Traveling Naturally in France, by Dorian Yates, ISBN: 978-1-55643-806-6
